Play-Based Learning

Through play, children develop critical social skills, such as cooperation and problem-solving, as they interact with peers. This approach also supports cognitive development, as play often involves experimentation and discovery, which enhances their understanding of the world. Play-based learning can improve emotional resilience and self-regulation by giving children the opportunity to navigate challenges in a low-pressure environment. Overall, it provides a holistic foundation that nurtures a child's growth in a joyful and effective manner.

Social development

In mixed-age settings, older students often take on mentorship roles, reinforcing their own knowledge and leadership skills while guiding their younger peers. Conversely, younger children benefit from observing and imitating more advanced skills and behaviors, which can accelerate their own development. This setup also encourages a sense of community and collaboration, as children of varying ages work together and support each other’s growth, promoting a more inclusive and empathetic learning atmosphere.

Arts and crafts

Engaging in creative activities each day helps children enhance their fine motor skills, spatial awareness, and problem-solving abilities. Additionally, these activities foster self-expression, boost confidence, and encourage imaginative thinking. By making art a regular part of their day, we create a vibrant learning environment where children can explore their creativity while reinforcing cognitive and emotional growth, making their educational experience both enjoyable and enriching.

Meet our teacher

Hi! I’m Stephanie Hart, the new Director at SPNS, and I’m honored to partner with you during this special time in your child’s early development. With over a decade of experience in Early Childhood Education—including roles as a Preschool Director and Family Success Coach—I’m passionate about creating a nurturing, play-based environment where children feel loved, learn new skills, and build lasting friendships, while families feel supported and valued. Outside of work, I’m a proud mom to two young boys and enjoy spending time in nature with my family. I’m thrilled to be part of this wonderful community and look forward to connecting with you.

What our families are saying

"Summerville is such a beautiful and welcoming school, it allows me to be there with my 3 1/2-year-old and be able to have my 8-month-old with me too. The ability to enjoy school with my child, while still being able to breastfeed my newest baby is like a lifeline."

“Not only has SPNS been really great for my son’s socialization but some of my closest friends are parents I met at the school. SPNS has helped my son learn to manage his emotions and big feelings, given him the ability to sit through group time without distraction, shown him the joy of learning, and gifted him with many trusted adults in his life. We are so grateful to SPNS.”

“SPNS has been a great introduction to school for our two boys. They have learned some great fundamental basics, like playing well with others, taking turns, sitting and listening at group time, counting, letters and phonics among so much more. Watching my sons grow at this play-geared preschool has been a delight, as well as being a part of a great group of families.”

“Summerville Parent Nursery School was the ideal place for my daughter to express her creativity, blossom socially, and learn with and from other kids. I love that the students spend most of their time outside, in rain, snow, or sunshine! The staff is phenomenal and the school itself so precious - it truly is a little school with a big heart!”
